One is the School of Legal Studies 1, Dr. Janaki Ammal Campus, Kannur University and the other is newly established School of Legal Studies 2, Manjeswaram Campus, Kannur University. The Department of Law was established in 1996 with the main purpose of promoting legal education in the Malabar region. The School of Legal Studies is an institution recognized for its ongoing commitment to academic excellence and service to the public. This legal institution establishes its role as a resource for the legal development of the nation. It should always respond to the challenges of social change and be relevant to people`s growing legal and other legal needs. The institution is entirely focused on providing its students with innovative and challenging exposure. Students are able to develop a legal temperament. The quality of legal education integrates its legal concepts with a practical understanding of the law. Programs develop the soft skills and core competencies that are essential to legal education.

Emphasis is placed on the development of analytical and reasoning skills, oral and written communication, knowledge translation, intellectual curiosity and professional integrity. The university, named Malabar University, was established by the promulgation of an ordinance by the Governor of Kerala on 9 November 1995.
